Dropshipping Parcel Costs: Actual Weight vs Dimensional Weight

A light product can still be expensive to ship when its packaging takes up a lot of space. To compare small-parcel quotes from China, provide both the finished parcel weight and its outside dimensions. Product weight alone is not enough.

What is chargeable weight?

Actual weight is the weight of the parcel including packaging. Dimensional, or volumetric, weight converts the space a parcel occupies into a weight used for pricing. DHL explains that its express charges generally use the higher of actual and volumetric weight. The divisor, rounding and minimum charges must be confirmed for the particular service you book.

A worked example, not a universal rate rule

Suppose a packed parcel measures 30 × 20 × 15 cm and weighs 1 kg. If the quoted service uses a divisor of 5,000 cm³/kg, the dimensional weight is 30 × 20 × 15 ÷ 5,000 = 1.8 kg. A service that bills the higher weight would start from 1.8 kg before applying its rounding or minimum-charge rules.

If the same product safely fits a 25 × 20 × 10 cm package, the calculated dimensional weight under that same example rule is 1 kg. This illustrates why finished packaging matters. Do not reduce protective packaging if doing so increases damage risk.

Measure before you request a quote

1. Pack the order exactly as it will ship, including inserts and protective materials.
2. Weigh the entire package and record the unit, such as kilograms or grams.
3. Measure its outside length, width and height, including any bulges.
4. Repeat for bundles and multi-item orders; one SKU can produce several parcel sizes.
5. Ask how the carrier remeasures parcels and handles billing adjustments.

Questions that make two quotes comparable

• What weight rule, divisor and rounding increment apply?
• Is there a minimum billable weight or a per-parcel handling fee?
• Are fuel, remote-area and oversized-package charges included?
• Are packaging and pick-and-pack priced separately?
• How long is the rate valid, and what changes if dimensions differ?

Does the cheapest weight rate mean the lowest total cost?

No. Compare the same parcel, destination and delivery scope. A lower price per kilogram can be offset by a minimum charge, extra handling or a different delivery service. Ask for a worked quote using a representative parcel rather than comparing rate-card headlines.
