For a shipment from China to the USA, prepare accurate product information and consistent shipment documents before dispatch. Confirm the applicable entry requirements with the responsible customs broker. Good preparation can reduce avoidable queries, but it does not guarantee release or prevent an examination.

Documents and information to prepare

  • Commercial invoice: seller and buyer details, clear product descriptions, quantities, prices, currency and agreed sales terms.
  • Packing list: carton count, contents, weights and dimensions consistent with the shipment.
  • Transport document: bill of lading or air waybill details, including the correct parties and routing.
  • Product specifications: material, function, composition, intended use and any proposed classification for review.
  • Origin and value evidence: information supporting the declared origin and customs value; additional evidence where required.
  • Product-specific requirements: applicable permits, registrations, labels or test information, as confirmed for the actual goods.
  • Importer arrangements: the importer of record, broker authorisation and other entry requirements confirmed through the appropriate secure process.

The exact set of documents depends on the shipment. Do not assume every product requires the same certificate, or that a packing list and invoice alone satisfy every agency’s requirements.

HS and US HTS codes are related, not interchangeable

The international Harmonized System provides the shared four- and six-digit framework. The US schedule adds national detail at eight and ten digits. A supplier’s export code is useful background, but the US import classification must be checked against the actual product. See the USITC classification FAQ.

Classification is based on the goods and applicable rules, not the lowest available duty rate. Product regulations can also depend on composition, use and other facts; a code alone is not a complete compliance review.

ISF is an ocean-shipment requirement

Importer Security Filing applies to cargo arriving in the United States by ocean vessel, not air cargo. For an ocean shipment, agree the filing responsibility, data and deadlines before loading. Other reporting and entry requirements can still apply to air or parcel shipments. See CBP’s guidance for new importers and exporters.

DDP does not replace the customs compliance process

A sales term allocates responsibilities between seller and buyer. It does not by itself identify the importer of record or remove statutory obligations. Confirm the importer, broker, declared information and access to entry documents rather than assuming a DDP label settles these questions. CBP’s customs broker guidance discusses the importer’s reasonable-care responsibilities.

Read our DDP, DAP and DDU comparison and US duty and customs-value checklist before comparing quotes.

Pre-shipment checks for FCL and dropshipping

  • Reconcile invoice quantities, packing details and actual cargo.
  • Describe products precisely instead of using labels such as “accessories” alone.
  • Disclose batteries, liquids, powders and other characteristics relevant to acceptance.
  • Resolve classification and product-document questions before booking.
  • Confirm customs contacts and the process for responding to requests.
  • For FCL, align the clearance plan with the receiving appointment and container arrangements.
  • For parcels, confirm data per order and whether the recipient may have to provide information or pay import charges.

Frequently asked questions

Does complete paperwork guarantee clearance?

No. Authorities can request additional information or examine cargo. Accurate records help address questions but do not guarantee a release date.

Should I use the supplier’s HS code without review?

No. Supply the code and product specifications to the responsible broker for a destination-specific review.

Do all shipments need the same product certificates?

No. Confirm requirements for the product, intended use and destination before dispatch. Avoid relying on a generic certificate list.

Prepare your shipping enquiry

For USA FCL DDP, send the product details, packing list and delivery ZIP code. For dropshipping parcels, add packed weight, dimensions and expected order volume. Contact LHD Logistics to discuss the shipment scope; provide sensitive importer identifiers only through the agreed secure process when needed.
