FCL uses a dedicated container for a shipment; LCL shares container space with other shipments. The choice should reflect packed cargo volume, weight, handling and delivery requirements, not just a single freight-rate comparison.
Start with accurate measurements
List carton or pallet counts, outside dimensions and gross weights. Flag items that cannot be stacked and any loading restrictions. A total product quantity without packing details is not enough for a reliable space comparison.
Compare the full route
Ask for quotes using the same origin, destination and cargo-ready date. Review collection, origin handling, main transport, destination handling and final delivery. Identify any charges that depend on storage, examinations or waiting.
Consider handling and receiving
LCL involves consolidation and deconsolidation. FCL requires a suitable container loading and receiving plan. Neither description alone establishes the risk or delivery time of a particular shipment. Review packaging, handling requirements and the proposed route.
FCL and LCL side by side
| Question | FCL | LCL |
|---|---|---|
| Container use | A dedicated container for one shipment | Shared space, consolidated with other cargo |
| Charging basis | Per container, plus origin and destination charges | Per cubic metre or tonne, whichever is greater, subject to a minimum |
| Handling | Loaded and sealed at origin, opened at destination | Consolidated and deconsolidated at a container freight station |
| Fits when | The cargo fills a container by volume or weight | The consignment is smaller, or a shared sailing meets the deadline |
LCL chargeable volume is normally the greater of weight or measurement, with one cubic metre treated as 1,000 kilograms. Confirm the rounding method and the minimum charge in the written quotation.
When should you ask for both options?
If the cargo could fit either service, request both comparisons. There is no universal volume threshold where FCL always becomes cheaper. Container availability, route charges and local delivery conditions can change the result.
Questions for your receiving warehouse
- Can the site receive a container, or does it need palletized delivery?
- Is an appointment required?
- Who provides unloading equipment and labor?
- Are there vehicle, access or delivery-hour restrictions?
- How are waiting time and missed appointments handled?
FCL or LCL is different from DDP
Container utilization and delivery terms answer different questions. You still need to agree the shipment’s commercial and operational scope whichever transport option you choose.
