How long does shipping from China take? The answer depends on the origin, destination, booked service and the start and end points of the estimate. A sailing time is not a door-to-door delivery time. For a useful China-to-USA estimate, provide the cargo-ready date, pickup location, US ZIP code and shipment details.
Compare transport options on the same basis
| Option | Timing to request | Stages to check separately |
|---|---|---|
| Express or dropshipping parcels | Carrier acceptance to delivery for the specific service and ZIP code | Order processing, packing, customs handling and delivery exceptions |
| Air freight | Airport-to-airport or door-to-door estimate, clearly labelled | Collection, export handling, flight routing, clearance and final delivery |
| Ocean FCL | Scheduled departure, port arrival and estimated delivery date | Cut-off, terminal release, inland transport, warehouse appointment and unloading |
| Ocean LCL | Consolidation cut-off, sailing and availability at destination | Origin consolidation, destination unpacking and final delivery |
Request a dated estimate for the actual route rather than treating a generic range as a booking commitment. For example, DHL Express’s delivery-time guidance explains that estimates depend on shipment and location details and may exclude customs time. Check the terms of the selected service.
Five milestones for a China-to-USA FCL shipment
- Cargo ready: packing, labelling and documents are ready for the agreed collection.
- Origin cut-off and departure: confirm the cargo and document deadlines and planned vessel departure.
- Port arrival: identify the US arrival port and whether the itinerary includes transshipment.
- Release and inland delivery: confirm the clearance, terminal availability and trucking plan.
- Warehouse receipt: confirm the appointment, unloading arrangements and receiving process.
Some activities overlap. Ask which stages are already included in the estimate instead of adding a fixed number of days to every stage. A vessel arrival date alone does not establish when inventory will be available for sale.
Use our US warehouse delivery checklist and USA FCL DDP service page when planning container replenishment.
Dropshipping: separate processing from transit
For consumer orders, record when an order is accepted, when the parcel is packed, when it is handed to the carrier and when it is delivered. Confirm whether the quoted timing starts at order receipt or carrier acceptance. Ask how weekends, holidays, address problems and import processing are treated.
Do not publish a single delivery promise for every US destination before reviewing the service terms. Start with representative ZIP codes and actual packed weights and dimensions. See our China-to-USA dropshipping service and parcel quote checklist.
Plan backwards from your required receiving date
- Identify when the goods must be received and when they must be available for sale.
- Confirm the receiving facility’s appointment and processing requirements.
- Request the current route schedule and estimated clearance and final-delivery stages.
- Compare the required booking date with supplier readiness and origin cut-offs.
- Agree a contingency plan for a missed departure, inspection or receiving delay.
Compare air and ocean using shipment-specific quotes and your inventory needs. Weight alone does not establish which mode offers the best total cost.
Frequently asked questions
Does DDP mean faster delivery?
DDP describes contractual responsibilities, not a transit-speed guarantee. The route, service and handling arrangements still determine the schedule.
Does LCL always take a fixed number of days longer than FCL?
No universal extra-day allowance applies. Ask for the consolidator’s cut-off, departure schedule and destination cargo-availability estimate rather than assuming it departs only when full.
Are the quoted days working days or calendar days?
Ask explicitly, including which country’s holidays apply and when counting begins. Record the start and end milestones in the quote.
Is an estimated delivery date guaranteed?
Only rely on a guarantee that is expressly included in the booked service terms, with its conditions and exclusions. An estimate by itself is not that guarantee.
Request a route-specific shipping estimate
Send LHD your pickup city, destination ZIP code, cargo-ready date and required receiving date. Include the product description, packing list or parcel dimensions and any warehouse appointment requirements. Ask for the scope, milestones and assumptions to be stated with the quotation.
